For years the city has been trying to revitalize downtown Yakima, and now city officials will be able to view special designs for a proposed downtown plaza that could pump needed dollars and bring people into the area in the future.

City Manager Tony O'Rourke says today is the start of a long process of deciding Yakima's downtown future.

First, a study session this morning for the City Council. Then, a public meeting tonight.

We get feedback on these designs and hopefully we decide on one design or a combination of elements that become one design.

Then in September, O'Rourke says the council will refine the proposal and begin looking for funding options. But the entire proposal is set for a public advisory vote in 2015. That vote could end the proposal or help refine it as the city moves forward.

Tuesday's study session is set for 9 a.m. at City Hall. The public meeting at the Seasons Performance Hall, 101 N. Naches Ave., gets underway at 6:30 p.m.
