Memorial Hospital saw a great turnout at the first annual Walk for Diabetes Prevention in Yakima.

Hundreds of people showed up Saturday to walk for a cause and bring awareness to diabetes prevention.

Organizers from the hospital told KNDO that being active is the key to prevention and maintenance.

"Watching their food intake, losing five to seven percent of their body weight and increasing their physical activity, they can actually reverse the pre-diabetes that they have," said Diabetes Education Coordinator, Lori Gibbons.

Doctors said using medication and checking your blood-sugar levels will help prevent or maintain diabetes. Nearly 26 million Americans have Type 2 Diabetes.

Also by incorporating physical fitness into a daily routine will help people with diabetes manage the disease.

Memorial is also offering a free diabetes screening on Nov. 16.
