SNOHOMISH, Wash. (AP) — The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office is conducting a death investigation after a woman's body was found in the Snohomish River.

KOMO-TV reports that the body was found by people who stopped at a small recreation area on Sunday afternoon.

Rachael Ford and her boyfriend noticed the body stuck in a small log jam about 15 feet from the shore and called 911.

Ford told authorities that another couple helped them confirm the grisly discovery in the cold, shallow water. The body was so badly decomposed that they couldn't tell if it was a man or a woman.

Search and rescue crews recovered the body from the water. A sheriff's office spokesman said it appeared to be an adult woman.
