A couple driving to the Central Washington State Fair on Sunday rescued a man who had caught fire when fumes from a nearby gas ignited his clothing and his garage.

The dramatic incident occurred at a home in the 5300 block of Nob Hill Boulevard.

Mike and Chelsey Quaale were on their way to the fair at about 12:20 p.m., but as they drove by the home they saw the man on fire in his front yard. After they stopped, Mike rushed to the garage and began putting the fire out with a nearby garden hose. Chelsey went to assist the man, removing his burning clothing and dousing the fire.

The victim suffered second- and third-degree burns on his lower legs. He was taken to a Yakima hospital.

Firefighters say the was working on his vehicle when fumes from a nearby gas can caught fire, which spread to his clothing and the garage. He is expected to recover from his burns.
