Corn Down on USDA Sept Report; Healthcare #3 Farmer Need

**Corn production is forecast at 14.2 billion bushels, down 6% from last year but up less than 1% from the USDA’s August forecast.

Based on September 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 169.9 bushels per acre, up 0.4 bushel from the August forecast but down 4.7 bushels from last year.

If realized, this will be the third highest yield and production on record.

**In addition to matters like renewable fuels and farm bill policy, members of the National Farmers Union are taking on one of the hottest legislative topics in health care.

About 320 members, taking part in the organization’s annual fall fly-in this week, are tasked with getting commitments from staffers and lawmakers to “support bipartisan legislation that increases the number of family farmers and ranchers with access to affordable, quality health care.”

National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson tells Agri-Pulse the decision to have healthcare among the organization’s top-three issues was made at a July board meeting.

**Dairy Farmers of America has teamed up with Third Sun Solar to bring more solar energy systems to dairy farms.

The deal announced Tuesday gives DFA co-op members discounted equipment, plus access to Third Sun’s project planning and development teams.

DFA member Gary Kibler tells Brownfield he recently had 480 solar panels installed on his farm which is expected to provide more than 163 kilowatts of electricity in the first year, saving him more than 23-thousand dollars.
