Controlled Burn Threatens Wapato Homes

A controlled burn Tuesday near Wapato got out of control and threatened homes in the 9800 block of West Wapato road.

Firefighters got the call at around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. When firefighters arrived, they found a fast moving grass fire with two homes being threatened. Two Yakama Nation Fire Management crews were called in to help provide structural protection.

Several cars were burned and a large shop had some damage. Firefighters were able to get the fire at the shop under control quickly. Crews got the entire fire until control just before 8:00 p.m. No other structures were damaged.

The fire was caused by a controlled burn that got out of control.
