28-years-ago the Yakima City Council voted to ban pit bull dogs. Now the city is revisiting the ban at the request of city council member Carmen Mendez. She believes a breed specific ban is unfair and doesn't improve public safety. She tells KIT News "I think you don't have bad dogs you have bad owners who teach them things they shouldn't." Mendez, who has family members outside the city who own pit bulls says it's not the breed itself but rather how they are raised. She says the breed specific ban needs to be lifted. The city council voted Tuesday to bring the issue back for discussion on Tuesday, June 21. Mendez says she's getting a lot of support for the effort. A move to repeal the ban failed in 2013.
