Yakima city officials have learned the city is not currently under a 30-day deadline to decide whether or not to appeal a Federal voting rights order that calls for Yakima to change it's election system to give more of a voice to Latino voters. City Manager Tony O'Rourke tells KIT News. "The 30-day window would only come into effect if the judges' order was a final order. It's not a final order so therefore it's not relavent right now. Once he has a final order then the clock starts ticking." So O'Rourke says the city continues in the mediation stage following the judges order to change the city election system. When that stage is finished the order will be final and the city will then have 30-days to decide whether to appeal the judges order.
