Yakima City Manager Tony O'Rourke says the city deserves a new indoor pool facility and should not spend more money on refurbishing Lions Pool.

That is what he says he will tell City Council members during tonight’s meeting. The council will be talking about the future of city pools, and O’Rourke says he will tell council members spending $3 million on refurbishing Lions Pool is not a good investment.

We can build something new in partnership with other entities in the community. I think that’s a better long-term strategy. That’s a decision for the council to make and hopefully they’ll give us some direction tonight.

Building a new indoor pool facility would cost the city between $8 million and $10 million and would require partnerships with community organizations and the Yakima School District.

O'Rourke says the city currently has $13 million in the general fund to spend on a new pool facility and the redesign of North First Street.

The City Council meets at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
