The city of Yakima has until this Friday (April 17) to file an appeal in the federal voting rights case.

Mayor Micah Cawley says the city will call a meeting sometime before Friday to talk further about the issue and possibly take a vote on an appeal

"We'll get together this week and put it to bed once and for all," Cawley said. "We'll figure out if this is being appealed or if we'll  move on with it and be done."

If the council votes to not appeal, the city must move forward with the judge's order to create seven new voting districts to give Latinos more of a voice in local politics.

County Auditor Charles Ross says the districts have already been drawn up and the system is ready to go, but he's waiting for the City Council's decision. The council has until close of business Friday to file an appeal.

Cawley says he's leaning toward appealing the case.
