Whether you call it a welcoming city or a sanctuary city Yakima city council members defeated a resolution last month that would have made Yakima a welcoming city. But that resolution didn't die. Its now in the hands of the Yakima city Public Safety committee and it's Director is city council member Carmen Mendez who says they may soon hold a public forum on the issue to talk further about it. But she doesn't believe the issue will be brought back for a public vote. "It would only have to be through someone who was on the prevailing side and I don't see any of the council members who prevailed changing their minds."
The council voted 4-3 to defeat the measure. Mendez says the intent of a future public meeting is simply to talk about the issue. No date has yet been set for a public meeting. We'll keep you you informed.
