The Yakima City Council has an important task during their executive session Thursday.

Yakima City Manager Tony O'Rourke says the council will be talking about how to respond to a federal voting rights ruling that could change how City Council members are elected to office.

We’ll be meeting with our outside counsel and our city attorneys and determine what course of action the city will take as a result of that ruling.

Because the meeting is a private executive session, media will not be allowed to attend.

City leaders could choose to appeal the ruling or to abide by the decision. A federal judge last week issued the ruling in favor of the American Civil Liberties Union in the lawsuit it filed over voting rights in Yakima. The ACLU contends Yakima's current system has prevented Latinos from having a voice in local politics.
