Charter Schools Could Be on Their Way to Yakima

Three Washington school districts, including a Yakima area school district, say they plan to apply to become charter school authorizers.

KNDO is reporting that the West Valley School District in Yakima along with the Tacoma and Highline school districts are interested in becoming authorizers. Tacoma and Highline were on the original list of districts what wanted to become an authorizer for their district but neither school district turned in an application.

School districts have until December 31st to complete their applications to the State Board of Education if they decide to go ahead with the idea.

Earlier this year the Spokane School District became the first district to gain authorizer approval from the state board.

A statewide panel called the Washington Charter School Commission also can approve charter schools in any part of the state.
