The National Rifle Association went quiet after last week's shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, and many have been wondering what the gun-advocacy group would have to say. On Tuesday, the NRA released an official statement:
In the wake of the horrific killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School last week, Americans across the country are wondering how they can aid the families of the victims. There are numerous methods to donate money, but you also can help in other ways, such as volunteering your time, writing a card or letter, or sending a teddy bear to a child in Newtown.
During a Sunday news conference, police said the gunman in Friday's school shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. possessed much more ammunition in addition to the rounds he used to kill 20 children, seven adults and himself. Authorities also responded to a phoned-in threat at a church near the scene of the tragedy which has left the small New England town shaken and in a state of solemn mourning.
Authorities have released the names of the victims of Friday's mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, in which Adam Lanza, 20, reportedly killed 27 people, as well as himself. Lanza's rampage began when he shot and killed his mother, Nancy, at her home before he drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School and killed six adults and 20 children before taking his own life.

UPDATE 6:30 p.m.: Originally it was thought that Adam Lanza, the gunman, shot his mother at the Sandy Hook Elementary school, where she was a teacher's aide. ABC has learned that, in fact, Nancy Lanza was killed at her home (by her son) prior to the massacre. He then drove to the school, where he killed 20 children and six adults, before killing himself.
When something like the horrific shooting spree at Sandy Hook Elementary School happens, the major sports we follow can suddenly feel a bit smaller. As reported earlier, a member of the Kansas City Chiefs committed suicide Saturday morning. While no motive has been released, the player's name and more details in the tragedy have emerged. Linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend before driving to the Chiefs' practice facility at Arrowhead Stadium and shooting himself in front of Coach Romeo Crennel and manager Scott Pioli
