Caregiver Charged with Assault of Infant

A 29-year-old woman arrested May 1 after she admitted being rough with a 17-month-old she was caring for was charged with first-degree assault Monday in Yakima County Superior Court.

The baby has been removed from a Seattle hospital, but the child's condition is unknown.

Yakima County sheriff's deputies say they were called to a home in the 16000 block of Summitview Road May 1. The infant was found nearly unconscious and barely breathing.

Deputies say the suspect, Marisela Avila Alaniz from Cowiche, told investigators she had become frustrated while caring for the child and was rough in handling the baby.

The woman is being held in the Yakima County jail. Her bail was set at $500,000.
