A 24-year-old man is dead and a Yakima Police officer is on administrative leave after a shooting Saturday night following a car chase.

It started as police tried to stop the man, who was reportedly driving erratically on Fair Avenue. The suspect pulled into a driveway in the 500 block of Fair Avenue but then backed into a patrol car and sped away, and turned on to I-82 and drove to the Nob Hill Boulevard exit.

He then tried to get right back on the freeway by driving on the eastbound on-ramp. Instead, the car came to a rest on the shoulder of the on-ramp. Police say the car's tires got lodged in some of the rocks. That is when police opened fire.

While officers arrested the man, they noticed he had at least one gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

His name has not yet been released.
