Cap’n Crunch Sails Away Into Retirement?

Removed from the Quaker Oats website, many were left to wonder what would ever happen to Cap’n Horatio Magellan who embarked on a journey to feed kids each morning and be a staple in many fun recipes including the weird sandwich that freak-girl made in The Breakfast Club.

A company spokesman states

“Our research shows that PepsiCo is no longer marketing Cap’n Crunch cereal directly to children. In a sense, you could say that they have retired Cap’n Crunch, and that’s a good thing,” writes Jennifer Harris, director of Marketing Initiatives at the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at Yale University, in an email. “Unfortunately, children continue to view hundreds of ads per year for high-sugar cereals from General Mills, Kellogg’s and Post Foods.”

This is probably the reason you see those old school ‘throwback’ boxes of Cap’n Crunch in your cereal isle – to slowly faze him out. Cereal production hasn’t stopped completely but with kids and parents making healthier choices nowadays, I’d say stock up while you can because no telling how long the ride will last.
