California lawmakers want  Democratic Governor Jerry Brown to sign off on a bill  requiring public schools to teach the contributions of gays and lesbians in American history as part of the social studies curriculum.

Former Republican former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar bill five years ago but Brown says he will sign it.

State Senator Mark Leno , a San Francisco Democrat, says its important share with students the broad diversity of the human experience and to remind them that that our democracy protects everyone.

Republicans fear its just another step in the process of indoctrinating children to accept homosexuality.

State law already requires schools to teach about a variety of minority and ethnic groups including women, African Americans, Mexican Americans, entrepreneurs, Asian Americans, European Americans, American Indians and labor groups.
