  • The Yakima city council has set a date for a public hearing on a proposed smoking ban at parks during special events.

Some council members say initiating a smoking ban would protect others from secondhand smoke and make people more considerate of others around them, but they want to hear your thoughts first.

The public hearing is Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. in city council chambers.

  • A Yakima teen is in the hospital after being pulled from a King County lake Wednesday.

Divers pulled the unconscious 17-year-old boy from a lake at a state park near Enumclaw.

King County Fire District No. 44 officials say witnesses called for help Wednesday afternoon after seeing the boy struggling in the water at Deep Lake in Nolte State Park. Medics began CPR and the boy was rushed to a nearby hospital. His condition was not known.

The teen was not identified but officials say he was part of a community church group from Yakima.

Update 8:50 a.m.: According to KOMO and KIRO news out of Seattle, the 17-year-old boy has died.
