Brian’s Blog:It’s Friday the 13th! Are You Superstitious?
Did you know that exactly 13 weeks ago was a Friday, April 13? And that exactly 13 weeks before that was a Friday, January 13? Yes, 2012 has three Friday the 13ths. Coincidence or conspiracy?
Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about Friday the 13th:
According to folklorists, there is no written evidence for a “Friday the 13th” superstition before the 19th century. The earliest known documented reference in English occurs in Henry Sutherland Edwards‘ 1869 biography of Gioachino Rossini, who died on a Friday 13th.
He [Rossini] was surrounded to the last by admiring friends; and if it be true that, like so many Italians, he regarded Fridays as an unlucky day and thirteen as an unlucky number, it is remarkable that one Friday 13th of November he died.
Personally, Friday the 13th doesn’t bother me. I am a little superstitious, but not to the point of knocking on wood, or tossing salt over my shoulder. I do say “bless you” when someone sneezes. I’ve always thought that a Monday the 13th would be more to fear, because Monday’s can be bad news all on their own!
How superstitious are you?
