It's almost June 1st. That means that another Yakima Valley summer is on the way. Even though summer doesn't officially start until June 20th, I still think of summer as being the 1st of June until after Labor Day. That's the old school summer vacation calendar from when I was a kid. Now it's more like June 15th to August 21st.

Summertime is a great time in the Yakima Valley is a great time.  Lots of sunshine, high temperatures, outdoor activities. Plenty of opportunities for great fun.

What's your favorite part of summer here? Is it events like Gap to Gap, Case Of The Blues, Bears baseball? Heading into the Cascades for camping, hiking, boating, or fishing? Maybe a trip to Mt. Rainier? And don't forget touring wine country.

One of my favorite summertime activities here in the valley is going to the produce stands along Lateral A road for world class Yakima Valley produce. The Farmer's Market is fun, but there's something about going to the source for that great sweet corn, giant tomatoes and more.  A simple thing, but a tradition in my family.

One thing that I really miss that no longer exists here in the Yakima Valley that was a big part of my teen years was summertime trips to the drive in movies. Here in Yakima, we had the Cascade, the Tower, the Fruitvale and Country drive  ins. We also would hit the Top-Hi in Toppenish. Take a warm Saturday night where the movies didn't start until almost 10pm, throw in triple feature, and it was starting to get light the next morning before you knew it.
