The State Board of Education is meeting in Yakima this week to talk about charter schools.

Spokesperson Sarah Lane says board members will deal with a request by the Spokane School District to open a charter school Wednesday. She says, “Spokane is the first district in the state to apply to be a charter school authorizer.” But the Spokane District needs approval from the board of education before it can move forward.

Spokane might be the first district to apply for charter schools but other districts around the state are interested in creating charter schools including the Sunnyside and Yakima School Districts.

The board is meeting at the ESD 105 offices on South Second Street from 8:00 a.m. in the morning until 5:00 p.m. in the afternoon. The board will deal with the charter school request at about 1:00. The meeting is open to the public.
