Yakima City Manager Tony O'Rourke is recovering from a serious mountain bike crash in the Cowiche Canyon on Thursday. O'Rourke, who was wearing a helmet says he was riding along a bike trail when he hit a rock and was thrown off his bike and into a larger rock. He says as soon as he landed he was temporarily paralyzed because of the trauma to his back. "I couldn't move my arms. But thank God this Dr. James Goldberg from Regional Hospital was literally right there so he stabilized me. Then our fire department crew from Station 92 came in and took care of me and hauled me out of there." O'Rourke says he regained feeling in his arms about an hour after the crash which happened about a half mile up the Cowiche trail from the parking lot on Scenic Drive. He spent hours at a Yakima hospital before being sent home to recover. Doctors found O'Rourke experienced spinal cord trauma in the crash and other cuts and bruises. O'Rourke won't be traveling with a city delegation to Washington D.C. next week. He'll be staying home checking with doctors to ensure his full recovery.
