Yakima Police say even though it is the season of giving there is a lot of people taking. Burglaries, shoplifting and vehicle prowls are the most popular crimes this time of year. Police Capt. Rod Light says officers cannot be everywhere. If people see something suspicious they should call the police.

While home burglaries and vehicle prowls are not the only crimes on the rise in the holiday shoplifting cases are as well. Yakima Police Department says the total number of shoplifting cases so far this year exceeds that of all last year. There were 634 shoplifting cases so far this year. Compare that to a total of 597 cases for all of last year. From November to December last year there were 141 reported shoplifting cases were reported.

Police are trying to crack down on the theft in various ways. Light says during the holiday season they keep tabs on known robbers and suspects by staying in touch with their probation officers.
