It's almost that time of year again, when despite all the warnings people become victims of what police call warm up auto theft. People leaving cars warming in the driveway unlocked. Yakima Police spokesman Mike Bastinelli says the city continues to combat auto theft with 351 vehicles stolen within city limits so far this year. "We were at one time among the top ten in the nation for stolen vehicles but we've made significant progress."
And they want to keep that progress going. So Bastinelli says if you plan to warm up your vehicle this fall and winter get an extra set of keys and lock the doors or consider purchasing a remote starter.
If you're concerned about your vehicle being stolen
Yakima Police are hoping you'll get involved in the program called Watch Your Car. Drivers sign up at yakimapolice.org or at the police station and receive a sticker to place on a vehicle. When an officer spots that sticker, if your vehicle isn't supposed to be anywhere but your driveway or garage the officer could then stop the vehicle and possibly recover your stolen car.
