CAMANO ISLAND, Wash. (AP) — The Washington State Patrol says a baby and a toddler were killed when the minivan they were riding in slid on icy road, hit a tree and burst into flames.

Sgt. Mark Francis says the girls' mother was seriously injured in Tuesday morning's crash on a rural road on Camano Island. The girls, ages 5 months and 3 years, died at the scene. The woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in serious condition.

Francis says the woman told troopers that after hitting the tree, her legs were stuck and the car was on fire. She finally managed to free herself and tried but wasn't able to rescue her girls. Two passers-by rushed to help and one burned his hands in the process.

Francis says weather and poor road conditions were likely factors in the crash.
