Good News for the future prospects of Northwest apple growers. The award for most popular fruit among children  goes to... Apples!A new study published in the journal Pediatrics found that apples accounted for nearly 20 percent of all fruit consumption among kids ages two to 19. They were followed by citrus juice and apple juice in popularity.

The study showed bananas were the second most popular whole fruit, accounting for 6.8 percent of kids' total fruit intake.

The researchers also found that, on average, children and adolescents eat 1.25 cups (10.4 ounces) of fruit each day and about half of that comes in the form of whole fruit.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends kids get one to two cups of fruit a day.
