A horse with the West Nile virus is being treated in the Cowiche area whle another is also being treated in East Selah. Dr. Lutz Harfst with Animal Medical Service in Yakima says when west nile was first found in the area many people vaccinated horses. "But then we had kind of a lull and people didn't vaccinate. So now we're seeing a resurgence of the disease." So if you have horses Dr. Harfst recommends getting them vaccinated against West Nile even if you don't see any mosquitoes in your area. And Harfst says if its been a while since you gave your horse a vaccine it needs to be repeated. He says if it's not an annual booster within 11 to 12 months of the last shot you need to start over the process.
