You can take the man out of the Northwest but you can’t take the Northwest out of the man.  In my 30+ years in Washington I have found residents here to be extremely loyal to their home state.  Ask a Washingtonian where he/she would live IF they could live in any of the great 50 United States and more often than not they’ll stick with Washington…BUT not all U.S. residents see it that way .

A Harris poll reveals the top choices if you could live anywhere in the United States from Maine to Hawaii.  In the poll respondents weren’t allowed to choose the state in which they currently reside. Hawaii tops this list, followed by California and Florida, according to an annual Harris Poll of 2,463 adults. Apparently we love sunshine and warm weather!  (doesn’t bode well for my home state of North Dakota!)

This is the first time since 2001 that California isn't in the top slot. Hawaii, California and Florida have consistently been in the top three the last eight years the Harris Poll has asked this question. While Sun Belt states have traditionally dominated the favorite state list, this year, with the inclusion of Washington, Oregon, Montana and New York in the top 15, the list is more diverse. In fact, every geographic region of the country is represented.

Here’s the list:

  1. Hawaii
  2. California
  3. Florida
  4. Texas
  5. Colorado
  6. North Carolina
  7. Oregon
  8. Arizona
  9. Washington
  10. Virginia
  11. New York
  12. Tennessee
  13. Montana
  14. Nevada
  15. South Carolina
