  • Developing renewable energy presents an enormous economic opportunity for rural America according to Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack.

Vilsack says new funding provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Energy for America Program will help farmers, ranchers and rural small business owners incorporate renewable energy and energy efficiency technology into their operations while creating jobs and helping America become more energy independent.

The 2012 Census of Agriculture shows more than 57,000 farms reported using a renewable energy system in 2012.

  • Agriculture is facing the challenge of difficult weather conditions at the same time as the challenge to increase food production to feed a growing world population.

University of Delaware researcher Carl Schmidt says the game is changing since the climate is changing and agriculture has to start anticipating changes to make to feed nine billion people by 2050.

Schmidt and his colleagues visited Africa to study how potential new breeds of farm animals could withstand climate change. Warmer temperatures can create problems for animals raised for food.
