The American Civil Liberties Union has rejected the City of Yakima's redistricting plan in a Federal voting rights case. But the city is going forward with the plan submitting it to a Federal judge on October 3. Yakima City Attorney Francis Floyd told council members Today. "The ACLU rejected both our plan and map objecting to any plan that contained any at large positions." Floyd says the ACLU will also present a plan to the judge that will contain 7 individual districts. The city plan calls for current council members to serve out their existing terms, with 4 members up for re election in 2015 and the remainder in 2017, but the ACLU rejected that part of the plan as well. It wants all council members to run for election in 2015. Despite the objection from the ACLU the council has decided to submit the city plan to a judge and the ACLU is also presenting it's plan on October 3. The judge will then decide which plan gives Latinos more of a voice in local politics.
