It is called biosolid or sludge; treated sewage that is used as fertilizer in many areas of Eastern and Central Washington.

The biosolids used in this area come from King County sewage plants and that has the group Friends of Toppenish Creek concerned. Spokeswoman Jean Mendoza of White Swan wants to educate people in the valley about the sludge.

We want farmers who are accepting this waste to understand what is in it and whether they think it’s safe to apply to their crops.

Mendoza says they are also concerned about the potential health risk that she says could affect residents.

The group Friends of Toppenish Creek is holding a conference to talk about the issue at 4:30 p.m. on the afternoon of July 31. The meeting will be held at the Eagle Seelastee Auditorium in the Yakama Nation Agency building at 410 Fort Road in Toppenish.
